“Big Three” emerging in Charlotte
Since the loss to Boston on December 1, a power trio has emerged for the Charlotte Bobcats. Of the 486 points scored by the Bobcats over the last five games, 63 percent of that total has come from Raymond Felton, Stephen Jackson and Gerald Wallace.
Jackson has led in scoring at 117 points, while Wallace scored 103, and Felton 88. Wallace has pulled down 70 rebounds to 23 for Jackson and 13 for Felton.
The only other double-figure scorers to emerge over the last five games are Tyson Chandler (twice), Boris Diaw (twice), Flip Murray and Nazr Mohammed, once each.
Boris’ power shortage has been somewhat troubling. Last year he averaged 15 points a game and shot 50 percent from the field. He gathered in five rebounds and handed out four assists a game. Lately, those numbers have been slashed by a third. He’s averaging only 10 points per game over the last 10. Boris is shooting 44 percent from the field. His rebounds are down to 3.2 a game and the assists are a very pedestrian 2.1.
Stephen Jackson has definitely impact how the ball is being distributed since coming on board November 16. It used to be left to Raymond Felton and Boris Diaw last season to start and complete the offense. Boris missed half of training camp and was still getting himself back in shape when Jack arrived.
Coach Brown says one of the best ways a team can come together is through solid defense. The third quarter of the San Antonio game proved that point as Charlotte raced back into the game outscoring the Spurs 17-1 down the final 4:40 of the third. That defensive mindset was on display once again a night later as the Bobcats frustrated Dirk Nowitzki into a 1-11 start from the field. But, as everyone knows, Dirk heals fast and scored 18 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to carry the day. He scored the basket that sent it into overtime with 10 seconds left in the fourth and put the Mavs ahead for good with 1.7 seconds left in overtime.
